I am travelling often to conflict torn countries. Important is always to believe in yourself and being open to the people there, listen to them and being empathetic. Because all over you find humanity, at least one touch of it.

Es ist sein erstes Buch. Und es geht um die Frage nach der Barmherzigkeit, ein Thema von zentraler Bedeutung auch in seinen Lehren und in seinem Zeugnis. In der ihm eigenen volksnahen und direkten Sprache fasst Papst Franziskus weitere seiner Ideen zusammen und geht auch auf Themen wie Selbstgerechtigkeit, Korruption, Anmaßung und Scheinheiligkeit ein. Schließlich gewährt er persönliche Einblicke in seine Zeit als Priester. Das Buch ist entstanden aus einem Gespräch mit dem Vatikan-Experten Andrea Tornielli. Es richtet sich an alle Menschen, innerhalb oder außerhalb der Katholischen Kirche.
Das wäre doch mal ein schönes Ostergeschenk? Auch für Nicht- oder Andersgläubige!
Papst Franziskus (Jorge Mario Bergoglio SJ), geboren am 17. Dezember 1936 in Buenos Aires, wurde am 13. März 2013 zum 266. Oberhaupt der Katholischen Kirche gewählt. Er ist der erste Jesuit und der erste Lateinamerikaner auf dem Stuhl Petri. Zuvor war er Erzbischof von Buenos Aires (1998-2013).

“Travel far enough, you meet yourself.”
Yes, sometimes this really happened to me. When I read this quote written by English author David Mitchell, I remember feeling a bit surprised as well as confirmed. In as little as six words he had perfectly captured how travel made me feel when I was much younger and when I loved to explore the world solo.
Over the last years I’ve been so lucky to visit some of the most beautiful places on earth, yet it’s the people I meet on the road who make these adventures so precious. I’ve travelled with a Maori Man in New Zealand, hiked by pouring rain to Machu Picchu far up in the Andes in Peru, wandered along some tough trails through the jungle of Belize and spent an afternoon with Burmese Aung San Suu Kyi in her house in Yangon.
And all these memories are the reason why I do love travelling solo. The next time you’re planning a holiday abroad, a weekend getaway, or a road trip closer to home, think about travelling solo – it’s highly rewarding!

I have been quite exhausted when I came back from travelling in Pakistan. I had a stopover in Istanbul, meeting my friends. What would be better for my tired body than visiting an original Turkish Hamam?
Yes, I did it. I walked into the camegah (lounge) of the Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı and was taken by surprise by the grandeur of the building and the impressive main dome, considered among the largest Hamam domes in Istanbul. While the staff member explained me the details of the ritual, I had a sip of the traditional home-made şerbet (sherbet).
After I was guided to the dressing room to don my peştamal (the classic cotton hamam wrap) and to start my Turkish Bath experience. A special attendant, – natır (for ladies) and tellak (for men) – who assisted me all along my journey inside the Hamam, welcomed me at the entrance of the hot room. To relax and soften my skin as well as helping my body to adjust to the heat of the Hamam, I was first lying down on the Göbektaşı, the hexagon heated marble in the middle, for 20 minutes. Then, my attendant took me to the Kurna (the marble water basin) where she exfoliated my body with a special scrubbing mitten, the kese. After rinsing, the final step of the ritual – Köpük (bubble soap wash) – started and I got rubbed with a loofah, leaving me with a complete feeling of purification.
After I could enjoy the ambience of the Hamam as long as I liked. Again at the camegah I was resting on the comfortable sofas and enjoyed some Turkish black tea.
What a treat! By the way, it was the birthday present from my friend Vivian, whom I visited in Istanbul.
Das Buch ist eine literarische Verarbeitung von Erinnerungen an Ulrike Meinhof und führt zwangsläufig in eines der dunkelsten Kapitel der noch relativ jungen Bundesrepublik.
Sehr gespannt war ich auf die Lesung von Meinhofs Stieftochter Anja Röhl. Gut zwei Stunden hat sie aus dem Buch vorgetragen, nichts dazwischen kommentiert sondern erst nachher. Ihr eigener Erzählstil erzeugte Spannung und auch Verständnis – ja, zumindest ein bisschen – für eine RAF-Terroristin, die Röhl als warmherzig und sensibel schildert.
Das Buch ist aber auch eine Abrechnung – mit dem gewalttätigen Vater, der schwachen, in eine desolate Frauenrolle gepressten Mutter und mit sich selbst als Missbrauchsopfer. Sie berichtet über Heimaufenthalte mit körperlichen Züchtigungen noch in den 1960er Jahren und immer auch von Naziattitüden der Älteren.
Als Tochter aus erster Ehe Klaus Rainer Röhls lernt Anja im Alter von fünf Jahren die neue Freundin und spätere Frau ihres Vaters kennen: Es ist Ulrike Meinhof. Es entsteht eine unerwartet intensive Beziehung, die über Jahre anhält, auch als Ulrike Meinhof in Isolationshaft in Köln-Ossendorf und später in Stammheim inhaftiert ist. Anja Röhl besucht sie im Gefängnis und erhält von ihr Briefe.
Anja Röhl beschreibt ihre Stiefmutter als Gegenpol zum sehr autoritären Umfeld ihrer Zeit – ganz anders, als ihre Halbschwester Bettina Röhl, die ihre Mutter entmythologisieren möchte. Das führte letztendlich auch zum Bruch mit der Halbschwester.

Straßenbahn in der Istiklal-Einkaufsstraße.
Wieder ein Selbstmordanschlag heute morgen in Istanbul. Noch genau vor einer Woche war ich in Istiklal, eben dieser Einkaufsstraße unterwegs, um ein bisschen Shopping zu machen, denn dort gibt es tolle Geschäfte. Sie ist ganz in der Nähe des Taksim-Platzes mitten im Zentrum von Istanbul. Ich muss wohl einen Schutzengel gehabt haben. Mal wieder!
