Some years ago I promised my friend Reguina to come to the US for the graduation of her son at Penn State, Pennsylvania. He graduated in Telecommunications. Soon he will start an internship at a TV channel in Chicago.
Three times a year the small town of State College is busy with people. Three times a year are graduation ceremonies and parents and relatives are coming in hords to share the honor with their daughters or sons. Everybody is proud – parents, grandparents, relatives, friends. During these days State College is doing its big business. All hotels and restaurants are sold out and you see on each corner young students with funny hats walking around.

Many years ago I was one of them. Proud of achieving my Master´s degree in International Economics at the State University of New York at Albany. My mother, who died long time ago, flew in and was as happy as I was. There were no cell phones around, only a few computers, students stuck together in the library rooms for studying and I lived in a big apartment with up to five roommates. It was one of the happiest times in my life.
During these days I met Reguina. She was the only girls who came over from Moscow University on a stipe. She stayed 3 months, time enough for our life long friendship. Some years later, still during the Cold War and when I lived again in Germany, Reguina came for the summer visiting me. My mother had signed a personal guarantee for her and we could relive our friendship. Up to this day we have been writing each other long letters to keep updated one to another.
Shortly after her visit in Germany Reguina moved to the US, getting a job at World Bank and later on she worked for banks in Philadelphia till today.
And now we were sitting together in one of the many rows of the ceremonial hall and watching her son. We both were thinking of the past, of our first encounter, of our student days in the US, of our summer together in Germany and of the long letters we wrote during the time of the Cold War when we could not see each other.
Thanks Reguina, you are a wonderful friend!
