Kahramanmaraş – In the land of Ali Baba

Hi, join me for sightseeing in Kahramanmaraş!

Hi, join me for sightseeing in Kahramanmaraş!

Third biggest mosque of Turkey.

Third biggest mosque in Turkey.

Kahramanmaraş is an ancient town in the South East of Turkey near the Syrian border. 80 percent of the population are supporters of the party of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan AKP. In the 1980s the city started to become a Boom Town, specialized in textile industry, which is leading not only in the country but even becomes a worldwide global player. Kahramanmaraş has the third largest mosque of Turkey with space for 10.000 prayers.

Today the town itself has a population of 500.000 people. Actually there are over 55.000 refugees from Syria in the city, 17.500 officially in the refugee camp and the rest around town, most of them illegally.

Once the place was called Germanicia Caesarea. The region is best known for its production of Salep, a flour made from dried orchid tubers, and its distinctive ice cream, called Maraş ice cream. It is commonly sold from both street vendor’s carts and store fronts where the mixture is churned regularly with long-handled paddles to keep it workable. Vendors often tease the customer by serving the ice cream cone on a stick, and then taking away the ice cream with the stick and rotating it around, before finally giving it to the customer. The speciality is tough and sticky, and it is sometimes eaten with a knife and fork.

Yummy! Maraş Ice Cream!

In 1918, Maraş had its name changed to Kahranmanmaraş when the Turkish government added „Kahraman“ to the name, in reference to the bravery of the people of the city in resisting against the French occupation after the First World War. „Kahraman“ means „hero“ in Turkish.

In December 1978, Kahramanmaraş was the site of a massacre of leftist Alevis. A Turkish nationalist group, the Grey Wolves, incited the violence that left 800 to 1.000 dead. The incident was important in the Turkish government’s decision to declare martial law, and the eventual military coup in 1980.KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Als Journalistin bei der Bundeswehr: Active Fence Turkey

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA IMG_1868 (Large)

(see English version below)

It was my second visit of the German military forces due to their NATO contribution. Last year I was with them in Masar-i Sharif, Afghanistan and this year in Kahramanmaras, South East Turkey at the most eastern NATO border.

Near the border to Syria the German army protects with its so called Active Fence Turkey the city of Kahramanmaras and its population against Syrian rockets. Starting in January 2013 as the first German PATRIOT task (the so called Defense rocket system), which will supposedly end in January 2015. Most likely it will be prolonged concerning the circumstances in Syria right now.

A contingent of 260 female and male soldiers are at the time being in the GAZI barracks of the Turkish army. The German army supports the air defence of NATO member Turkey (together with the US Army, the Netherlands and soon also the Spanish). Predominantly air force personnel will take part in operation „Active Fence Turkey“ and will offer logistical, medical and defense assistance.

“We work very well together with the Turkish Army”, says German commander Thorsten Ilg. “And we are very impressed by the great hospitality of the Turkish people.”

Visiting a Syrian refugee camp

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

So lucky! I did not imagine that it worked out. I wrote several times to Turkish authorities for permission of visting a refugee camp near the border with Syria. But I never got an answer. Today I tried it out – by myself – and slightly hoped everything might work out. But, telling the truth, I was never believing it myself.

Anyway, I got a driver who brought me to a huge refugee camp in Kahramanmaras. It is bordered by walls and fences. At the gate I showed my press documents and asked for permission to get in. Nobody of the gate people spoke English. After some phone calls from their side I could speak to somebody who understood English (which is very rare here!).

I explained him my reason to come. After some minutes of waiting he called back and told me that, without government permission, I cannot enter. But he could offer me some tea. Of course, I said, that would be very nice. A driver from the camp management picked me up and went with me inside. At first sight I saw the huge extension of the area, organized with playgrounds for the kids and some kind of supermarkets in huge tents.

We drove to the administration tent and I had the possibility to get an interview with the camp manager. Fact is, that actually 17.500 people are living here in tents, every day coming about 1.000 new refugees from war torn Syria.

After endless cups of tea and an interesting talk with no rush – thanks to an English translator – I left. Taking pictures were strongly forbidden, but I got a special permit to take some photos near the gate and from outside. While taking pictures a police car arrived. Lucky me, the translator was with me and he explained the reason of my being there. They left without approaching or even asking me.

I never thought it would happen this way. After shooting the pictures the translater drove me all the way down to the city where I finally started with my sightseeing trip. Again, another miracle happened to me today, which I never dreamed of. I made it to the camp and soon you can read my story with all the details.KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Reportagereise: Mit der Transall in die Osttürkei

Mein Ticket - endlich! Der zweite Transall-Flug meines Lebens.

Mein Ticket – endlich!

Krieg, Flucht, Verteibung, Gemetzel, wir alle wissen, was zurzeit dort passiert. Doch nun alles der Reihe nach …

Saying Bye to the man you fell in love with

HerzIt happened just one time in my life. After finishing my study I was ready to move to Hong Kong for a while. I found an interesting job there and I was single. Two weeks before I left I fell head over heels in love with someone in Germany. We had kind of a crazy whirlwind romance and suddenly I was sitting in the plane, ready to leave.

I became an expat in a new city, which not only brought with it a change for me personally, but also for my entire life. The possibilities were endless. All of a sudden there was a whole new list of opportunities and challenges awaiting me. Somehow I was just thinking big! Suddenly the whole world was limitless. I experienced not only a new culture and way of life whilst I was abroad, but also I made new friends and met colleagues from all over the globe.

It was just destiny, kind of the adage of “when you’re not looking you find it”. There was no way that my romance stopped me of going away, even when I was in tears. I told me all the time that I am an independent woman, even when I did not really believe it! And I told myself that being apart will be the perfect test of our relationship, leading him perhaps moving too or me perhaps moving back sooner than expected and either way lots of meeting in the middle. Nothing of that happened! We lost contact and we never saw each other again. But it is part of my life and I like to remember it.

After all, life should be passionate, challenging, scary, exciting! But life should never ever be boring. If you need a change, go for it! Try a new city or a new place with new faces, new language, new culture! Challenge yourself!

My Childhood Memories

My first holidays in Italy.

My first holidays in Italy.

When I was a young girl, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I knew the kind of woman I wanted to be. I wanted to be an independent woman, and I wanted to be in charge of my life, and that’s really what I wanted. I think what’s important is to be honest with yourself and figure out what life is all about.

Kurz nachgebellt: The Winner are … Mina, Ozkar, Pepe

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA(see English version below)

Dear friends,

I am proudly presenting Mina as Miss Halloween 2014. Concerning Mister Halloween 2014 I have to announce 2 winners with the same number of points: Ozkar and Pepe.
Yes, you read right: Pepe is a cat, ts, ts, ts …

For sure, Ozkar got a lot of points because of the delicious snack he delivered. It was so yummy, just extraordinary!

Miss Halloween got the most points with regard to the girlies. Mina is a real treasure. But I am really upset by the steady quarrels with Lexi, my Texan fiancée.

The election was free and fair under democratic principles.
Thanks again to all of you for having you here. See you next time.

Have a wonderful week.

Yours, Gaston.

Voodoo Collage3
