It is an unspoiled hideaway that has an unique atmosphere. For some days I just tuned in to the slow culture here, imbibed the peace and recharged my batteries with the soundtrack of the lapping waves after 10 days of a Detox retreat.

Ich mag Schwimmbäder. Und wenn ich unterwegs bin, gucke ich sie mir gerne an. Wie das hier in dem idyllischen Ort Coromandel Town, der selbst ein Überbleibsel aus der Vergangenheit ist. Und das Schwimmbad hat sich den Flair des ewig Gestrigen erhalten. Irgendwie rührend! Grund genug, es in ein paar Bildern festzuhalten.

„My grandfather had a farm, right outside the city I grew up. My town is called Nelspruat, next to Krueger National Park in South Africa. I was always there. At the weekends, at all of my school holidays. I have a brother who lives in London, We are completely different, he is a mechanical engineer. He likes the city life. Me not. My way of leaving legacy is conservation work in the bush. I want to give something back to the nature, to our world.
One day, when I have to die, I like something of me is there. Others write books, I do conservation work. Everything started at an early age. You need to understand the bush, the animals, the people. As a child I did enjoy the insects, the plants, the pure nature. After, I understood the connections. If you remove something from the chain, everything will collapse. That’s it. I decided to study nature conservation at Pretoria University. After 3 years I got my diploma. My first job was in the National Park of KwaZulu-Natal for 3 years.
Krueger National Park was next. For 8 years. My family was near by and I really enjoyed more and more becoming a Ranger. I got a gun licence but I never ever shot an animal. One time I had to do a warning shot for a buffalo. Crazy buffalos!! I met my Australian wife at Krueger Park. She is a Zoologist. Then I went on to Limpopo Game Reserve. And now here at Gondwana Game Reserve I also educate pupils. Many of them are coming from very poor families. Big eyes when they see for the very first time rhinos and lions. I like that. I talk to them about conservation work, I show them the animals. Kids always give you 100 percent of attention.
Rhinos, yeah, the rhinos. I love them. I am sad about them. They are getting killed every year by poachers. My view is: We get 10 years left and then there will be no rhinos anymore in the wilderness. Sad, sad, sad!
I am very nervous. I will be a dad in a few weeks. For the first time. I think my kid won’t see anymore a wild rhino and this breaks my heart. A rhino horn grows every year for about 2 Centimeters. The Asian market pays 50.000 Euro for a kilogram of Rhino Horn. The poachers will remain. There are so many.
Our rhinos are protected. They have 24 hours armed bodyguards. But the guards cannot just shoot a poacher. Only when the poacher threatens them they are allowed to shoot. But when the poachers are shooting the animal they can’t do anything. Devastating! It is the South African law system. I do not have any answer. The poaching problem will remain. For ever! At least, until people change its mind.“

Schon mal die Liebe eines Schweines gespürt? Von dem Gefühl habe ich eine ganze Menge abgekriegt.
Genauer gesagt auf der Route 309, die als idyllische Schotterstraße mitten durch die Coromandel-Halbinsel führt. Und kurz hinter Coromandel Town treffe ich auf Stewart und seine Schweine. Er liebt jedes einzelne von ihnen. Die Vierbeiner töten oder gar essen kommt nicht in Frage. Denn er hat genug Land, auf dem alle Tiere Platz haben.
Und es kommen jede Menge Besucher vorbei, die Futter mitbringen. Wem’s gefällt: Einfach mal anhalten und Hallo sagen. Und eines der Schweinchen ans Herz drücken. Gutes Gefühl! Es lohnt sich!

On May 5, 2015 New Zealand has set a great example to the world by recognizing what animal lovers have known forever – that animals are as sentient as we are, and they have feelings just like we do. This landmark ruling by NZ is the first time this shift in perception and policy has been extended to all animals, not just chimpanzees, orangoutangs or dolphins.
The Animal Welfare Amendment Bill passed May 5, 2015, aims to make it easier to prosecute people in animal cruelty cases, as well banning animal testing and research, and making all hunting, capture or ill-treatment of any wild animal illegal. Animal rights activists have celebrated the decision. „To say that animals are sentient is to state explicitly that they can experience both positive and negative emotions, including pain and distress“, said Dr Virginia Williams, chair of the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee. „The explicitness is what is new and marks another step along the animal welfare journey.“
„Expectations on animal welfare have been rapidly changing, and practices that were once commonplace for pets and farm stock are no longer acceptable or tolerated,“ said New Zealand Veterinary Association president Dr Steve Merchant. „The bill brings legislation in line with our nation’s changing attitude on the status of animals in society.

Genau hier ist er, dieser magische Ort, von dem die Maori glauben, dass die Seelen der Toten ihre letzte Reise antreten. Die Reise ins sagenhafte Land Hawaiki, irgendwo in der Ferne, nicht mit dem bloßen Auge zu erkennen.
Hier treffen sich die beiden Ozeane, der Pazifik mit der Tasmanischen See. in Maori-Sprache bedeutet Reinga „Absprung“. Mein Blick fällt nach unten, in diese atemberaubende Tiefe, wo schäumende Wasser alles verschlucken. Und hier ist die Vergänglichkeit fühlbar, die Mystik des Ortes greifbar. Gestern, heute und morgen. Die Zeit ist nur ein Begriff, sie wird angesichts der Natur zu einer Nebensächlichkeit.
Anreise: Über die Bay of Islands zum Cape Reinga. Entweder mit einer Tour oder mit dem eigenen Wagen.
