We approach the harbour front of Thesen Island at Knysna, Garden Route. Here it is: Ocean Odyssey. What does it mean? Their slogan: A whale of an adventure.
We are curious: A bunch of people, getting windproof jackets and a life jacket. I am one of them. With a speed boat we are heading towards The heads, the landmark of Knysna and beyond into the magic blue of the ocean. We are still along the coast. The first dolphins are swimming by. They greet us with big jumps and joyful play. Two girls are the first who are indicating the air fountain further out in the Ocean. A whale!
„It is a Southern Right whale“, says the Skipper. He drives the boat out there. Allowed is an approach of up to 50 meters. Indeed, the area of navigation runs parallel with the migration route favoured by Humpback and Southern Right whales. From May to December they are regularly sighted. We get him. The whale! Wow!

This trip was kindly arranged by Ocean Odyssee – however the thoughts are my own.
