Lisbon: Monument to the Discoveries

L1180895 (Large)My first trip to Lisbon was long ago, sometime at the end of the 1970s. All I remembered was the wonderful Monument to the Discoveries. Exactly that was for me the byword of Lisbon, not much else. And this year I came again. Of course, for me it was clear where I started my Sightseeing tour.L1180909 (Large) L1180897 (Large)The Monument to the Discoveries represents a three-sailed ship ready to depart, with sculptures of important historical figures such as King Manuel I carrying an armillary sphere, poet Camões holding verses from The Lusiads, Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Cabral, and several other notable Portuguese explorers, crusaders, monks, cartographers, and cosmographers, following Prince Henry the Navigator at the prow holding a small vessel. The only female is queen Felipa of Lancaster, mother of Henry the Navigator, the brain of the discoveries.L1180900 (Large)An elevator leads me to the rooftop which offers great panoramas over the city and the river.L1180906 (Large) L1180907 (Large) L1180905 (Large)The Monument to the Discoveries was originally built for the 1940 World Exhibition. It celebrated the achievements of explorers during the Age of Discoveries and the creation of Portugal’s empire. The monument was only built as a temporary structure and it was demolished a couple of years after the closure of the exhibition.L1180898 (Large)The fifty meters tall monument, shaped like a ship’s prow, stands at the marina in Belém, the starting point for many of Portugal’s explorers. This is where in 1497 Vasco da Gama embarked on his voyage to India and in 1493 a storm forced Christopher Columbus to anchor here on his way back to Spain after his discovery of the Americas.

At the foot of the Monument to the Discoveries is a giant marble wind rose embedded in the pavement. A map of the world at the center of the wind rose charts the Portuguese explorations. The map shows the most important dates in the history of the discoveries and ships mark the locations where Portuguese explorers first set foot on land.L1180904 (Large)The monument we see today is an exact replica of the original one. It was built in 1960 on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Henry the Navigator’s death. Henry the Navigator was a driving force behind the overseas exploration and he financed many of the expeditions.

Do not miss it when you make your way to Lisbon.

Flashback Afghanistan

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA(see English version below)

Afghanistan.

Afghanistan. I want to say thank you to my Afghan and German colleagues, to my drivers and to all the security guards who took care of me, guarded, warned and protected me during my travel. It would have never been possible without all of them. And I would have had a wonderful experience less in my life.FullSizeRender (Large)

Kurz nachgebellt: Tag der Plüschtiere (Plush Animal’s Day)

IMG_1705Der Internationale Tag der Plüschtiere ist heute, am 28. Oktober 2015.

Euer Gaston.

Kurz nachgebellt: The Ramparts of the Chateau du Monsieur Gaston

L1180859 (Large)Proudly I am presenting you the ramparts of the Chateau du Monsieur Gaston! The space called tilt yard, in between the two ramparts, measuring just over 1 kilometer in circumference, was levelled out in the XIII Century, at the time when the second wall was raised. From the XVII Century onwards, the poorest residents of Carcassonne built their homes here before these settlements were destroyed during the restoration of the City by Viollet le Duc in the XIX Century. Today, the tilt yard allows visitors to discover the different features of military architecture. I use them every morning when I am there for some running and sporty activities.L1180848 (Large)During the XIII Century, the Kings of France ordered the construction of a second defensive ring around the outside of the City, complete with dry moat. Just have a look! I am quite happy about that large space!

Yours, Gaston.

Collecting happy moments

DSC_8307 (Large)„The most important thing is to enjoy your life – to be happy – it’s all that matters.“

Audrey Hepburn

It’s so important to just be happy, you get one chance to make the best of your life so you should try your hardest to enjoy it. Do what makes you happy and forget the little negative things, because after all they only matter if you spend too much time thinking about them, instead collect happy moments and have fun! And it is so important to have good friends on your side.
